Andrew Evans is popular among many race fans as the entrepreneurial driver who had led Team Scandia to victory in the 1996 edition of the Indy 500. What is less known is that he paid his dues, just like any other driver does before being allowed to join the ranks of professional drivers. Only professional drivers are allowed to participate in events like the Indy 500.

Andrew Evans interest in racing began when he was only twelve years old. It was in the year 1963 he saw his Can-Am race. The race provided enough excitement to convince him that his future lay in auto racing. During that time many young boys also shared the same dream, but he was among the few who could turn his dream into reality.

Drivers who want to be a part of the racing world had to pay their dues. That meant they had to crisscross the country paying their expenses by themselves, while participating in small events. It was the hope of each of these drivers that they can build a strong reputation for themselves. By doing so they hoped to become professional racers themselves one day. Andrew Evans had to haul his own race car from one race track to another all by himself. Besides that he had to make sure that his engine was always in top condition. The most difficult part for him was to complete the administrative duties at each race track by himself.

He started an engine and restoration film during the early part of his career as a racecar driver. He named his firm Scandia Engineering. It provided him with the opportunity to learn about the latest development in the field of automotive engineering. The money he earned allowed him to finance his career.
